All you need to know about Poly Stretch Wraps

Like most packaging supplies, Poly Stretch Wrap is used to protect products during storage and transportation. It is a highly stretchable plastic film (typically made with polyethylene) wrapped around items. It’s also commonly called pallet wrap. Due to the elasticity of the film, it holds items tightly, preventing them from moving during storage and transportation. One of the most common uses is to secure products on pallets.

Thickness: Different thicknesses offer different levels of durability and protection.

  • Thicker films, such as 20-35 μm (80-140 gauge), are suitable for heavy or sharp-edged objects, providing enhanced puncture resistance, allowing the film to withstand heavier loads.
  • Thinner films, like 10-15 microns (40-60 gauge), are ideal for lighter items or when cost-effectiveness is a priority.

Width: Stretch film comes in a variety of widths, typically 12 inches (30 cm) to 20 inches (50 cm). The choice of width depends on the size and dimensions of the object being wrapped.
Choose a wider width when packing larger or bulkier items for better coverage and stability.

Application: There are two main ways stretch wrap can be applied: by hand or by machine.

  • Hand Wrap: when the stretch film is applied manually by hand, which can be done with or without a hand dispenser. All hand-applied stretch films are supplied on standard cores for use with hand-applied or expanded cores. Hand/Machine Film
  • Machine Wrap: when stretch film is applied to pallets or products using pallet wrap. A pallet wrapping machine is a machine that automatically wraps film around the product. Machine-applied stretch film is extremely strong and flexible, saving time, resources and packaging materials for high-performance applications requiring higher tensile strength. These membranes have excellent puncture resistance and good grip, sliding and load holding capabilities.
