Most people treat a carrier bag as finished the moment the shopping is unpacked. It rarely is. A polyethylene bag that has carried groceries home is usually still sound, and with a little care it can do several more jobs before it goes to a film collection point.
So how do you reuse plastic bags well? Keep the good ones somewhere you will see them, match each bag to a job it can handle, and recycle it properly once it tears. The ideas below cover households and offices. The second half is for shops and distributors, because the bag you stock decides how often it gets reused.
Seven second jobs for a carrier bag
- Take it shopping again. Fold a few intact bags into the car, a backpack or a desk drawer. Check the handles first and save the thicker bags for bottles and tins.
- Line a small bin. Bathroom, bedroom, office and car bins rarely need a full-size liner, and a used carrier fits them well.
- Wrap things for a move or for storage. Shoes, cables, tools and fragile objects stay cleaner and drier, and scrunched bags make light void fill in a box.
- Make a dust sheet. Cut a bag along both sides and open it flat to cover a table while painting, repotting plants or doing crafts.
- Crochet it. Plastic yarn, often called plarn, is made by cutting bags into loops and linking them into one strand. Mats, totes and pouches all work, and bags of one colour give a tidier finish.
- Weave or stuff it. Thicker frosted bags can be woven into small storage baskets, and bunched bags make a filling for outdoor cushions that shrugs off damp.
- Recycle it when it is worn out. This is the last job, covered below.
One limit worth knowing: a used carrier bag is fine for a bedroom bin, but kitchen and commercial bins take heavier, wetter waste. For those, a liner from a proper trash bag range is sized and gauged for the load and will not split on the way to the outside bin.
When the bag is finished
Many kerbside schemes do not take plastic film, because it wraps around the sorting machinery. Supermarkets and local recycling centres often have a separate film collection bin instead. Bags need to be clean, dry and empty, with receipts and paper stickers removed. Check your local rules, since they differ from one area to the next.
How many trips can one bag manage? There is no fixed figure. A thin carrier may last a couple of shops; a heavier bag with reinforced handles can go on for months. Retire it once the film tears or the handles start to stretch.
For retailers: stock a bag people keep
Shoppers reuse bags that feel strong enough to trust. That makes bag style and gauge a real sourcing decision, not only a cost line. A rough comparison of the three formats most stores look at:

Two more details help. Keep the bag mono-material, all HDPE or all LDPE, so film recyclers can process it more easily. And print a short “please reuse” or recycling message on it. It costs little extra once a print run is already planned.
If you want customers to reuse a carrier bag, look at the handle before you raise the gauge. A useful check is to load a sample with the heaviest typical basket and carry it a few hundred metres: T-shirt bags usually fail at the handle root first, so a small gusset or a slightly wider handle often does more for durability than adding microns across the whole bag.
