The most common mistake in learning how to choose garbage bags is treating thickness as the measure of strength. A thin HDPE liner can carry office paper all day without trouble, and a thicker liner in the wrong resin can still split the first time it meets a broken chair leg. Strength depends on what goes into the bag and what the bag is made of. Start with the waste, then the material, then how the bag closes and is dispensed.
Start with the waste stream
Before looking at any spec sheet, list what will actually go in the bag at each site. Most buyers end up with three or four streams, and each one asks something different of the film.

Once the stream is clear, size follows from the bin. We cover that in detail in our trash bag size chart; the short rule is to allow enough overhang to fold over the rim and to go one size up if there is no exact match.
HDPE or LDPE/LLDPE?
Nearly all bin liners are polyethylene. The grade changes how a bag feels and, more usefully, how it fails.
HDPE liners are thin, light and slightly crinkly. The film has high tensile strength for its gauge, so a low-micron bag holds a fair weight of soft, even waste, and it uses less resin per bag. That makes HDPE the economical choice for offices, washrooms and paper. Its weakness is puncture. Once a corner pierces it, a tear runs quickly.
LDPE and LLDPE are softer and stretch before they break. A sharp edge dents the film instead of cutting straight through, which is why low-density liners are used in kitchens, yards, building sites and for heavy-duty contractor bags. For the same job they are normally thicker than HDPE, so the cost per bag is higher.
This is why comparing gauges across materials misleads. Ask suppliers to quote material and thickness together, in microns or in mil for North American buyers, and judge samples on your own waste.
Colour
Black hides contents and is the default for general waste. Black film often includes recycled resin, because the pigment covers colour variation, which can lower the price; quality varies, so test rather than judge by colour. White and clear bags look clean front of house and let cleaners check contents for sorting. Blue, green, yellow and other colours help keep recyclables, organics and special waste apart.
Closure and dispensing format
Flat-top bags are tied by hand and cost least. Drawstring trash bags close cleanly and carry easily, which is what most household shoppers prefer. Tie-handle (flap tie) and twist-tie bags sit between the two on price. For janitorial teams emptying many bins a shift, coreless star seal bags on roll dispense fast, and the star-shaped bottom seal spreads the load with no side gussets to leak.
Then decide how the bags reach the user: rolls with or without core, folded packs, retail boxes or bulk cartons. Pieces per roll and rolls per carton should match how your customer buys, not only how freight is cheapest.
A useful check on samples is a fill-and-drop test with the real waste. Load a bag to the weight it will carry in use, lift it by the neck or the drawstring, and drop it from knee height onto a hard floor. Then look at where it failed, if it did. A split along the bottom seal points to a seal problem; a tear starting from a puncture points to the resin. Those two need different fixes, and a thicker bag only solves one of them.
