Pallet wrapping film and common confusion about names

In industrial production, pallet wrapping film is a quite familiar product. They are not used to wrap pallets as the name suggests, but actually to secure goods on that pallet. This is especially effective when using forklifts to move goods multiple times in the factory or when transporting goods to partner warehouses. Wrapping pallets with plastic wrap helps improve labor safety and prevent falls and spills, especially for large bulky goods.

Definition of pallet wrapping film

Even though they look the same, both come in rolls and are transparent, pallet wrapping films actually come in many types and materials. However, we can divide them into two main types based on the way they wrap and secure goods.

1. Shrink wrap or Shrink film

Màng co POF (Polyolefin shrink film)

This type of packaging is characterized by the fact that when exposed to high temperature (either a heat gun or direct heat from an automatic wrapping machine) it will shrink and tightly hug the goods.
Made mainly from polymer synthetic plastic materials, there are 3 most popular types today: POF, PVC and PE shrink film.

PVC shrink film (Polyvinyl chloride)

This type of packaging is affected by temperature changes, they become brittle when exposed to cold and wrinkled when the temperature increases. However, they hold up well and are very difficult to tear. The shrinkage of this type of packaging is also not high. They can easily be damaged if you try to use heat to shrink them too much.

POF (Polyolefin) shrink film

POF shrink film has excellent transparency to show the product inside. Besides, the very high recycling rate and the ability to shrink quickly and sustainably help this product replace the gradually outdated PVC material.

PE shrink film

The shrinkage when affected by temperature of PE shrink film is quite low, only reaching about 20%. They are less common than PVC and POF shrink films.

2. Stretch film

They are often made from PE material, so they are also called PE stretch film or chit film.
That shrink but based on a different principle than shrink film. They need to be stretched when wrapped onto the goods. The elasticity of the material will help them wrap tightly and wrap around the product without needing heat.
They are widely used in transporting goods such as moving houses, furniture upholstery, brick and wood pallets, …
