Plastic Bag As The Best Option
Bread in a plastic bag could be remained fresh for a week or more without becoming mouldy.
WRAP, the organization responsible for advancing the plastic, re-design, recycle, and re-use agenda in the UK, suggests that plastics may be the best solution in certain situations…
It provides an air, water and hygiene-tight barrier for perishable and easily-damaged goods, which helps prolong shelf life and reduce waste (food waste is a huge contributor to carbon emissions, so this is important in the fight against climate change).
But Isn’t Paper Better?
Not necessarily, it requires more environmental resources to make, is heavier to carry. While it is easily recycled, it has a few other drawbacks in the bakery and bread industry. It does not keep the bread fresh for as long, which might lead to greater food waste. Not only that, but the customer doesn’t receive the best value for their money because they have to eat it quickly to minimize waste!
A translucent panel is commonly found on paper bread bags, allowing customers to see inside. The panel is plastic, preventing full recycling. The seal uses a large plastic label, creating the same issue.
We haven’t solved the problems of packing and food waste. But putting bread in a polyethylene bag is a far cry from the worst culprit and definitely helps reduce food waste. Consider this the next time you see a paper-wrapped bread product and assume it’s a greener option!
