Different trash bags are made to fit various sizes of garbage bins, and this can vary from country to country. So, how do you figure out which bag is right for your bin?

If you’re having trouble finding the perfect trash bag or feeling a bit confused, here’s what you need to know before making a purchase: Pay attention to the shape and size of your bin. The bag should be bigger than the bin’s gallon capacity and match its width.

Exploring the Various Sizes of Trash Bags in the U.S. Market

Trash bins vary in sizes, shapes, and capacities, leading to the existence of a wide range of trash bag sizes tailored to fit different bins. Interestingly, various countries also have their standard bin sizes.

In the United States, trash cans come in various shapes such as square, rectangular, or round. Consequently, there is a wide range of trash bag sizes available, spanning from compact 3.5-gallon options to expansive 60-gallon capacities. Measurements for bins and bags in the U.S. typically use inches and gallons. Additionally, there are different types of bags tailored to specific needs, including drawstring and hand-tie bags for easy closure, standard flat bags without tabs or strings, and stand-up bags for added convenience.

What Trash Can Sizes Are Commonly Used in the USA?

In the United States, the most commonly utilized bin sizes include the standard kitchen trash can and the larger commercial or recycling cans. Outdoor rolling garbage cans typically come in sizes of around 20, 35, or 60 gallons.

Indoor bins vary in sizes and shapes, but typically, a household’s primary indoor bin is approximately 10-16 gallons. Smaller bins designed for use in a bathroom, study, or bedroom usually range from 4 to 10 gallons.

Households with more occupants, generating more waste, or those with shared bins in complexes or apartments, naturally lean towards larger outdoor bins.

How Can I Determine the Right Size for a Trash Bag to Fit My Bin?

So you have your trash can and what the usage will be, but how do you choose the right trash bag? The wrong trash bag can be too tight, ripping or not catching all the waste due to the ill fit around the can. A bigger bag could slip inside the bin or catch on items, dropping some of the waste.

There are two key ways to determine what size of trash bag you should purchase based on the size.

What Trash Bag Size is Ideal for Each Room?

Different rooms have different trash disposal needs. Whether it’s a bedroom, kitchen, office, or outdoor space, the size of the trash bin varies. Consider your household size, as the amount of waste differs for a single person compared to a family of five. Here’s a simple guide to popular bin sizes for each room:

  • Small trash can for a bathroom or bedroom: 3.5-4 gallons
  • Standard kitchen use: 10-16 gallons
  • Standard wastebasket for an office, business, or study: 12-16 gallons
  • Commercial kitchen or common space: 13-20 gallons
  • Large office, storage, or spacious common area: 21-25 gallons
  • Handling substantial waste, like during spring cleaning: 31-35 gallons
  • Outdoor waste disposal: 40-45 gallons
  • Commercial use or significant cleanups: 56-60 gallons

For businesses, larger trash cans are preferable, especially when multiple people contribute to waste. Commercial kitchens or construction sites also require larger and more durable options capable of handling heavy waste or liquids.

Are Trash Bag Sizes Different Across Countries?

Certainly, in the U.S., there is a variety of popular trash can and trash bag sizes, as we’ve discussed. However, were you aware that in other countries, not only are there different popular sizes, but there are also different names for their trash cans.

The British and Australians often call their bins a rubbish bin or garbage bin and their bags have several names. This includes:

  • Garbage bag
  • Bin liner
  • Rubbish bag
  • Refuse sack

In these countries, the waste disposal is often a little different to the US and they have what they call “wheelie” bins that they put on the kerb each week for disposal. Their bags are also in centimetres (metric) and liters (capacity).

“Wheelie” bins in Australia for outdoor household waste tend to be a little bigger than US standard outdoor trash cans at 240 liters or 64 gallons. There are also recycling bins and green waste bins as well as smaller, two-wheel bins that most councils provide as part of a quarterly rates bill.
